UNAM Faculty of Law Joins NACLE Membership

Based on a decision taken by NACLE's members last Fall, NACLE is in the process of revising the exchange agreements with UNAM and the Instituto de Investigaciones Juridicas to add the UNAM Faculty of Law to the NACLE membership. Both UNAM institutions, the Instituto and the Faculty, will share the membership. The Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas is Latin America's leading legal research institute, but it is not a law school. UNAM's prestigious Faculty of Law is the largest law school in Mexico, with a strong influence on Mexican public law, and an outstanding faculty. Adding the Faculty of Law will create new opportunities for law students and faculties from NACLE's member law schools.

The Faculty of Law of UNAM is one of Mexico's leading law schools, with over 10,000 law students, as well as hundreds of graduate students studying in the master's and doctoral programs. The faculty of almost 900 law professors (full-time and part-time) includes many of the leading legal scholars and practitioners of Mexico. The addition of the Faculty of Law to NACLE will permit an expansion of exchange opportunities for students from NACLE member schools in Canada and the United States.

UNAM is known internationally as a leader Latin American legal studies. In June 2007, its main campus, Ciudad Universitaria, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more information on UNAM, please visit the University's web site (click here for English or here for Spanish).

18th International Congress of Comparative Law

The George Washington University, American University and Georgetown University law schools will host the 18th International Congress of Comparative Law. The event will take place July 25-31, 2010 in WAshington, D.C. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States and Justice Sabino Cassese of the Italian Constitutional Court will address the XVIIIth Congress. A number of faculty from NACLE schools will also be participating in the event.

ITESM Monterrey to Host International Arbitration Conference

On April 29, 2010, the ITESM Monterrey Campus will host the First Conference on International Arbitration. Meg Kinnear, General Secretary of the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) of the World Bank, and Ricardo Ramirez, the Mexican member of the Appelate Body of the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization will be key event participants.

Prof. David Gantz Publishes Article on NAFTA

NACLE Professor, David Gantz, recently authore gantz d a paper discussing NAFTA dispute settlement issues within international courts. The paper is titled The United States and NAFTA Dispute Settlement: Ambivalence, Frustration and Occasional Defiance. To read the abstract, click here.

Prof. Vaughan Black's new book "Foreign Currency Claims in the Conflict of Laws"

Professor Vaughan Black, of the Dalhousie University Schulich School of Law, has a book coming out soon with Hart Publishing (May 2010) which is entitled "Foreign Currency Claims in the Conflict of Laws". This book "takes a comparative look at how common law courts have addressed damages claims when foreign currencies are involved, and at statutory responses to that issue. It describes the practices of UK, Commonwealth and American courts in this field and draws both on principles of private international law and of damages assessment to analyse current practice".
