Social Dimension
NACLE’s workshops are designed to promote relationships among the participants, whether they are full-time faculty or law students who attend to make presentations of their research papers. The breaks, dinners and sightseeing – despite the heavy schedule of meetings in New York – gave the 47 participants ample opportunity to become acquainted and engage in lively discussions. Again, we are grateful to Fordham Law School for its generosity in hosting the lunches and dinners for our New York workshop.

On Friday evening, after our first workshop session, the group ventured to the West Village area of Manhattan, for a dinner at La Nacional, the oldest Spanish restaurant in New York City. Founded in 1868 by the Benevolent Spanish Society, “La Nacional” has long served as a meeting place for expatriate Spaniards and hispanophiles. In the late 1920’s, Federico García Lorca used it as a favorite hangout. Our group feasted on tapas and traditional Spanish paella, washed down with Spanish vino tinto.

Our dinner on Saturday evening was equally memorable.
Fordham Law School hosted a reception and dinner at Josephina’s, a three-star restaurant across the street from the Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center. After cocktails, we gathered for a seated dinner followed by a short program in which copies of the Statue of Liberty (christened “NACKLIES”) were presented to the outstanding students who presented papers to the group. Saturday evening’s closing dinner also allowed NACLE to thank our hosts at Fordham Law School, especially Joel Reidenberg and Toni Fine, for their hard work and generosity in helping to make the workshop successful.
